Day 1 of watching nephew is over...

In CategoryMy Life
BySandy

tomorrow is the second day. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I am going to be exhausted by the weekend!

I spent all day today playing catch up on the computer and just realized I never posted about yesterday! It went well. Really really well. Well, kind of really well. Sister in law told me she'd be dropping off around 7...and then called at 7:30 to say they weren't leaving until 8 or so. Why I was surprised, I don't know. This family is late EVERYWHERE. The day went well, drop off was pretty easy. He started to freak out so she gave him his bottle and then snuck out...he never even realized she left. Awesome. There's something to be said for having zillions of toys.

Our first hiccup? Meals and snacks. At our house we eat at the table and excuse ourselves when we're done. Apparently they graze. So nephew kept trying to get up from the table to go play, then come back. When I called him on it he did the "I'm going to cry" face. He stopped really quick when he realized I wasn't looking anymore. By the end of the day he was AWESOME at excusing himself when he was done and bringing his spoon to the counter.

Nap time was a bit of a mess. I told my kiddo that it was quiet time...and he freaked out. Then I realized nephew wasn't following us and told him to come on, it's time to lay down. Oh my gosh, you'd think I'd told him I was going to cover him in honey and then hit a bees nest. I left him screaming and throwing a tantrum while I got Scotty into the bathroom and done.

Then we went back and grabbed nephew and brought them to Scotty's room. Scotty wanted to lay on the mattress on the floor, so I put nephew in the bed. He whined and cried like his world was ending for a few minutes saying something, I have no idea what. I finally told him he needed to turn off the tears and use his words...and he stopped crying! He stared at me for a minute then closed his eyes. Within 10 minutes he was out. Yay! Scotty laid in there for about 20 minutes before passing out.

Scotty woke up an hour before nephew, so we cuddled and he watched Toy Story while I read my book. Nephew woke up and we ate some supper and then went outside to play with bubbles, balls, golf clubs and anything else they could find. Sister in law was over an hour late...her and my brother in law didn't get here till 6:30! Yikes.

SO...it went well, I was exhausted, Scotty was exhausted...and nephew didn't want to leave. I think this will work out well :) I just need to get used to having two little kids around...three days a week is going to be tough. It's so different when they are your own!

Lemon Bars!

In CategoryMy Life
BySandy

Today is my Grandma's 81st birthday. Apparently she's not celebrating her birthday anymore, so there is no cake to bed had. So I had a bright idea...get up in the morning and make the lemon bars we used to make when I was living with her right after I got out of highschool! I have unsalted butter, there is no sodium in the lemon juice...we're good to go! Keep in mind that we're in the middle of a heat wave. At 6 am it was already 72 degrees in my kitchen. Is it the best idea to turn on the oven? Not really. For Grams, I'll do it. Here is a great recipe for lemon bars...hopefully they taste as delicious as I remember, despite being a little more brown than usual! (I'm still getting used to this oven!)
Bake Sale Lemon Bars

This recipe calls for 1/4 cup lemon juice, Grams and I always put 1/2 a cup and they turn out so yummy!

Enjoy! And Happy Birthday to the best Grandma ever!

5 Question Friday 7/9

In CategoryBlog Hops
BySandy

1. What is one food you could eat everyday?
Dessert. Seriously. Okay okay, how about chocolate? I could eat chocolate every day. Now that I think about it, I think I do :)

2. Are you working in the career you thought you would be when you were 18?
Yes! I always thought (and hoped!) I'd be a stay at home mom. Thanks to my wonderful hubby who works his bum off to make it possible, I am :)

3. What is something that you wish you would have done when you were younger and you didn't?
I wish I would have made more friends and participated a bit more in school. I'm not great at making friends, even now!

4. What color are your kitchen walls?
Blah. They're white/cream. And this is with 70's dark wood beat up cabinets. It's dark and depressing. Yuck. We're in a rental. In our old house? They were lime green! With golden oak cabinets and lots of light! I loved my old kitchen, it was so bright and cheery! When we move, my forever kitchen will be Granny Smith Apple Green with lemon accents...how could you get down in a kitchen that bright???

5. Do you remember what your very first favorite song was?
Not really. When I think about it? All I can come up with is Bless Your Beautiful Hide from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers...OR I've Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing. I grew up on both movies :)

As if I wasn't keeping busy enough...

In CategoryMy Life
BySandy

I just got myself a job! 3 days a week I'll be watching my nephew...yay! I am so excited, the kidlet is going to be in absolute heaven. The nephew is 9 months younger than Scotty and they play together really well.

So how did this happen you ask? Well, I'm still in shock myself. The hubby was on the phone with his brother and then handed the phone to me. Apparently the nephew went to his other cousin and spanked him on the bum and said "bad boy". My BIL and his wife don't spank...and the nephew is in daycare. SO they are yanking him out and I start Tuesday. It should be interesting, we don't see him very often so hopefully he doesn't freak out!

Another thing about this arrangement? It very well may cause some problems with MY sister. See, she's due with #1 in September and had asked me to watch HER little girl. We tried to come to terms with an arrangement and she didn't want to drop the baby here. She was fine with the baby here, I just had to come pick her up. Insane, right? So I ended up passing on that. I still feel a little guilty, but I'm not real comfortable being at her house. I'd end up cleaning and taking care of the dogs as well...I ended up being her cleaning person and meeting contractors at their old house all the time when I was watching her dogs! It took a bit of courage for me to quit then, so I didn't want to get into a bad situation with her again!

Fortunately, my BIL and his wife are reasonable. So we'll be trying this out and see how it goes...I think it'll be good. The extra money will be a big help, the socialization for the kidlet will be good. I'm horrible about getting him around other kids. I need to do better, I'm just not a real social person myself and have a hard time finding moms I click with!

Alright, I'm done rambling now...I just wanted to share how excited I am! I *think* this is going to be a blast...I'll finally get to be the auntie I wanted to when this little guy was born! Yay :)

I'll keep you posted on how it goes...next Tuesday should be interesting :)
